Is It Worth Teaching Kids to Code? What Every Parent Should Know

Not every kid who learns to code grows up to be a programmer — same as not every kid in piano lessons grows up to be a musician. The question "is it worth it" only makes sense once you separate it from the question of future careers.
The myth of the 'math kid'
Visual programming in Scratch doesn't require math skills beyond elementary school. Kids who like drawing, telling stories, or building with blocks do just as well as the "math kids" — because at bottom, they're building something of their own, and the math shows up along the way, not as an entry requirement.
What actually sticks
Three things carry over off the screen: breaking a big problem into small steps, systematically hunting down a bug instead of giving up after the first failure, and sequential thinking — what has to happen, in what order, for something to work. Those are useful in schoolwork and beyond, whatever the kid does next.
What it looks like off the screen
A kid who's learned to break a Scratch project into smaller steps tends to apply the same approach to homework or a school project — instead of "I don't know how to do this," they ask "where could I start." It's not automatic, but it's the most common change parents report after a few months of lessons.
What about screen time?
That's a fair concern, but it's worth separating passive watching from active building. A kid designing their own game is making dozens of decisions a minute — closer to building with blocks than watching a video. That doesn't change the fact that screen-time limits still make sense regardless of what's on the screen.
What it looks like in a good class
The kid designs their own game or animation, decides what should happen, and looks for the fix themselves when something breaks. The teacher keeps the pace and asks the right question, but doesn't do the work for the kid — because hunting down the bug yourself is the actual value here, not the finished result.
When to hold off
If lessons turn into one more obligation "because it's supposed to be good for them," and the kid clearly isn't interested, it's fine to wait. Forced learning rarely sticks. The right moment to start is when the kid asks, on their own, how to build a game or how an app they use actually works.
The short version
Learning to code as a kid trains logical thinking and patience — it isn't professional training for becoming a programmer. The value holds regardless of whatever path the kid picks later.
